Is Aldi Coming To New Mexico Or Albuquerque In 2022?

While the German grocery supermarket chain has fallen slightly behind their anticipated schedule, they nonetheless continue toward the goal of 2,500 stores.

With states like Arizona finally getting their first Aldi stores, you might be wondering: Is Aldi coming to New Mexico or Albuquerque? The answer you seek is below!

Is Aldi Coming To New Mexico Or Albuquerque In 2022?

Aldi has no current plans to open stores in New Mexico or its most populous city of Albuquerque as of 2022. Despite opening new stores in the nearby state of Arizona, and an established presence in Texas, Aldi has yet to expand into the Land of Enchantment.

To find out why Aldi doesn’t plan to come to New Mexico or Albuquerque, where they could set up shop if they decided to do so, and where New Mexicans can shop instead, keep reading!

Why Doesn’t Aldi Plan To Come To New Mexico Or Albuquerque?

Aldi is currently working on a building program that is focused on the Gulf Coast region.

Back in 2017, Aldi US announced its plans to ultimately have 2,500 stores operating.

They earmarked $5 billion dollars for the expansion and for store renovations in areas like the American northeast.

Meanwhile, those brand-new store openings have been focused on Gulf Coast states like Louisiana and Florida.

The company has also set its eyes on Alabama, where they began construction on a new distribution warehouse in Loxley.

While the focus has been on these Gulf Coast states, residents in states like California have seen more stores pop up.

And Aldi also opened their first stores in Arizona, with plans for more in the coming years.

Aldi is clearly being very strategic about where and how they plot their course through the U.S.

It’s hard to imagine that their goal isn’t to be operating in all 50 states, but it appears that they are going about this in a way that meets their objectives, if not the desires of shoppers.

With stores in states on either side of them (Arizona and Texas), I have to think that New Mexico, while it didn’t make the shortlist this time, will have stores in the not-too-distant future.

What Potential Locations Are There For Aldi In New Mexico Or Albuquerque?

What Potential Locations Are There For Aldi In New Mexico Or Albuquerque?

There are plenty of locations Aldi could set up shop in New Mexico and Albuquerque, should they finally turn their sights toward The Land of Enchantment.

For starters, Albuquerque is the most populous city in the state, with a little over half a million residents in the city limits and nearly one million in the metropolitan area.

There are quite a few neighborhoods in the city which look conducive to an Aldi store, such as Quigley Park, Nob Hill, and Loma Del Rey.

Outside of Albuquerque, there is also the state capital, Santa Fe.

Santa Fe is the fourth largest city in New Mexico, with a population of about 85,000, but it also sees tons of tourist activity for its many historical sites.

What Is The Closest Aldi To New Mexico And Albuquerque?

The closest Aldi to Albuquerque is the Gilbert, AZ store, which lies about 320 miles southwest.

Unfortunately, the Texas locations are grouped more easterly, away from the TX/NM border.

Where Can Shoppers Go Instead Of Aldi In New Mexico And Albuquerque?

New Mexicans and Albuquerque residents might not have any Aldi stores yet, but they do have plenty of popular alternatives.

The Sprouts Farmers Market has no fewer than six locations in the Albuquerque area, and three locations throughout the rest of the state, including two in Santa Fe.

There are also two Whole Foods Markets in NM, one in Albuquerque and one in Santa Fe.

And there are 23 Albertsons Markets in the state, with two in Santa Fe and 10 in the Albuquerque metro region.

Conclusion

While Aldi’s current building plan has passed over New Mexico and its city of Albuquerque, the company is clearly not done expanding the U.S.

Time will tell, but I wouldn’t be surprised if New Mexico finally saw at least a few Aldi stores when the company enters its next building phase.
