UPS Jewelry Shipping (Can You Ship It, Price, Steps + More)

Between worrying about insurance and the security of your package and trying to find a good shipping service, shipping jewelry can be an anxiety-inducing feat.

To help take some of the stress off, I did some research on UPS’ jewelry shipping- whether or not you can ship it, price comparisons, and more!

UPS Jewelry Shipping In 2022

You can ship jewelry with UPS, provided that the jewelry is not made with industrial diamonds or real precious metals such as gold or silver, as these are prohibited items. You can also only ship jewelry with UPS if it is valued at $500 or less, as UPS only assumes a maximum liability of up to $100 unless additional insurance is purchased.

Can You Ship Jewelry With UPS?

You can ship jewelry with UPS, provided that the jewelry does not have industrial diamonds, other precious stones, or precious metals such as gold or silver, as these are all restricted and prohibited items.

The only jewelry that can be shipped with UPS is jewelry that is valued at less than $500 per package and does not contain the above-listed restricted/prohibited materials.

If your jewelry is worth $150 or less and don’t contain precious metals or stones, it is considered costume jewelry and can be shipped internationally.

Any other jewelry that is shippable by UPS cannot be shipped internationally unless the consignee does the clearance and bills as prepaid, even if the package is sent as Free Domicile.

UPS does not ship precious metals or stones for a variety of reasons, but the most explicitly listed one is because of liability costs.

Theft or the misplacement of a package is always an issue when it comes to packages of high, liquidated value such as jewelry.

UPS only assumes a maximum liability of up to $100 per package unless additional insurance is purchased, regardless of the package’s declared value.

How Much Does It Cost To Ship Jewelry With UPS?

How Much Does It Cost To Ship Jewelry With UPS?

Provided that your jewelry does not contain precious metals, precious stones, and is valued at $500 or less, UPS is happy to help ship your jewelry.

When it comes to the way shipping costs are calculated with UPS, it predominantly depends on the weight of the package, the distance the package will travel, and how quickly you’d like the package to get to its destination.

Most of the time jewelry makes for a relatively lightweight package, so we can assume that the total weight of your shipment will be about one pound.

If we were to say the package needed to travel around 1,100 miles from the sender to the recipient, we can start to see a range of estimated prices take shape.

UPS tends to separate its shipping services into the days your package will arrive, and for a 1 lb package traveling 1,100 miles, there are three categories: next-day delivery, delivery within 48 hours, and delivery within 3 days.

For next-day deliveries, you can choose from UPS Next Day Air Early, UPS Next Day Air, and UPS Next Day Air Saver.

UPS Next Day Air Early is the most expensive option, with shipping costs totaling around $107, but guarantees delivery by 10 am the following morning.

UPS Next Day Air is a bit cheaper, coming out to just over $73 with delivery guaranteed by 3 pm.

UPS Next Day Air Saver is the cheapest of the next-day delivery options, coming in at $65 and promising delivery by the end of the day.

The next category of shipping services UPS offers is delivery within 48 hours, also called 2-Day Delivery, which offers two options: 2nd Day Air Early and 2nd Day Air.

While there are no specific guaranteed delivery times for 2nd Day Air Early or 2nd Day Air, they are guaranteed to arrive on the day listed.

The shipping costs for 2nd Day Air Early for a 1 lb package traveling 1,100 miles comes out to just under $30, which is slightly more expensive than 2nd Day Air as these packages are prioritized.

2nd Day Air charges right around $26 for the same package to be delivered on the same day.

Finally, we’ve got the 3-day delivery category of UPS shipping services, which includes UPS 3-Day Select and UPS Ground.

Neither of these options come with a guaranteed delivery time outside of the day of delivery, and the main difference is the method of travel.

UPS 3-Day Select charges about $19 to ship a package with the parameters we’ve outlined, and ships the package by plane.

UPS Ground charges about $12 to ship the same package and transports the package by truck.

All in all, the fastest shipping service UPS offers for a one-pound package traveling 1,100 miles is Next Day Early Air, although it is also the most expensive.

The least expensive option available for the same package is UPS Ground, although it will take around triple the amount of time to deliver as Next Day Air Early.

It’s important to note that all of these price estimates are just that: estimates.

How To Ship Jewelry With UPS?

When shipping jewelry with UPS, the first step is always to make sure that your jewelry is shippable, which means it does not contain any restricted or prohibited items.

Once you’ve verified that you can ship your jewelry legally with UPS, you should make sure to secure your package carefully.

Plenty of jewelry tends to be delicate, so make sure your jewelry is safely secured in a bag or attached to a cardboard slip/box to prevent tangling.

Then, wrap the bag or cardboard container in a couple layers of bubble wrap to prevent too much jostling while your item is in transit.

Once your item is safe and secured, place it in the padded envelope or the box you’ll be shipping it in and print off the correct label from the UPS website, which you can do here.

Once your label is affixed to your chosen shipping container, schedule a pickup on the UPS website- once your package is picked up, you can rest assured that it’s on its way to its final destination!

Conclusion

UPS does ship jewelry, as long as the jewelry does not contain precious stones, precious metals, or industrial diamonds, as these are all prohibited items.

UPS also only ships jewelry that is valued at $500 or less, as they only assume a maximum liability of $100 per package, regardless of the package’s declared value.

The fastest shipping service UPS offers is UPS Next Day Air Early, but it is also the most expensive.

The best bargain shipping service UPS has is UPS Ground shipping, although it can take around triple the amount of time to deliver as UPS Next Day Air Early.
